Death to the First Amendment!

All

I am afraid to write these words. My liberal friends might cancel me. My conservative friends might see me as a threat for challenging their beliefs. Fuck it. I believe more of us want free speech than want to silence it. No matter your politics. So here I am. We are killing the First Amendment ourselves. Liberals silenced conservative speakers on campuses. Conservatives sit quiet while Jimmy Kimmel is yanked off the air. Each side thinks they are protecting something. All we are really doing is sharpening the knife that will be used on us when the pendulum swings back. Free speech is the cornerstone. The First Amendment. The one thing that lets everything else stand. And we are burning it down. Not with one act of tyranny. But with a thousand little ones. Cheered on by whichever side benefits in the moment. Yes, free speech has limits. You cannot incite violence. You cannot make true threats. You cannot lie under oath or defame with malice. But being offended is not a limit. Feeling uncomfortable is not a limit. Being disrespected is not a limit. I despise the words some people say about me and my friends. Being called a groomer. Hearing Mexicans labeled as criminals. It cuts deep. But those people still have the right to speak. And I have the right to answer them. Debate them. Dismantle them. True fear is not ugly words. True fear is when ugly ideas become law. If we lose free speech we cannot fight what we do not believe in, because we too will be silenced. And so will you, my friend. It cuts both ways. And if we silence instead of confronting, if we bury instead of debating, we lose everything. I am not asking you to agree with me. I am asking you to be honest. When you look at your own life, are you safer now? Are you freer? Are you happier? Or are you just angrier? Has silencing anyone actually protected you, or has it only protected your outrage? When history asks who killed free speech, what will you say you were doing? Will toy be able to be honest?
