LGBTQ+ individuals face higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation compared to their heterosexual counterparts, and a lack of informed, sensitive care exacerbates these issues, leading to poorer mental health outcomes.
Mental Health America, 2021
Without adequate training, mental health practitioners may provide substandard care that fails to address the unique needs of LGBTQ+ individuals or those suffering from religious trauma, resulting in misdiagnosis, ineffective treatment plans, and a general lack of support.

Practitioners who are not trained to handle these sensitive topics may inadvertently cause harm, including reinforcing stigma, providing inappropriate or harmful advice, and failing to create a safe, supportive therapeutic environment ..

Practitioners not trained to handle sensitive topics related to sexuality, polyamory, kink, and sex work can inadvertently cause harm. This can include reinforcing stigma, providing inappropriate or harmful advice, and failing to create a safe, supportive therapeutic environment .
National LGBTQIA+ Health Education Center, 2021
Many mental health training programs do not sufficiently cover topics related to LGBTQ+ issues or religious trauma. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), training programs often fail to address the specific needs of LGBTQ+ individuals comprehensively.
While continuing education (CE) is required for maintaining licensure, there is a lack of specialized CE courses focused on these critical areas. The availability of CE courses that cover topics like ethical non-monogamy, sex positivity, and religious trauma is limited, leaving many practitioners without access to advanced, focused training.
There is a pervasive discomfort and bias among healthcare providers when addressing issues related to sexuality and LGBTQ+ identities. This discomfort can stem from personal biases or a lack of exposure to these topics during their education.
Systemic barriers within the healthcare system also contribute to the inadequate training of mental health professionals. For example, there may be institutional resistance to integrating comprehensive LGBTQ+ and religious trauma training into existing programs.
Many mental health training programs do not include sufficient representation of LGBTQ+ individuals or sex positivity. This lack of representation in case studies, educational materials, and training scenarios means that practitioners are not adequately prepared to address these issues in their practice.
